Classic Angels

Classic Angels Music Foundation was founded in 2012 by Unathi Hloyi who is the Executive Producer and Band Manager. A common vision of composing and sharing their love of music with the disadvantaged youth in their communities brought the band together. Classic Angels has since grown to seven members. The band prides itself in versatility in genres navigating from Contemporary Jazz, African Jazz, Gospel, Soul and RnB.

Since their formation Classic Angels has performed in numerous corporate functions, Jazz Events, Weddings and Festivals in around Nelson Mandela Bay. They envision to bring back the culture of live music from the township and to expose up-coming musicians to the live music culture, keep it alive for future generations to reflect on.

Members of Classic Angels, who are from Motherwell in Nelson Mandela Bay, are mostly scholars and students.

The group comprises of Phakamile Msizi on Saxophone, Bassoon, Clarinet and Flute. He has been playing music from the age of 13 a passion that gave him the opportunity to tour Germany with the MIAGI Orchestra. Drummer Thendo Mbedzi has been a full time drummer since 2013, playing with various bands and gospel groups in Nelson Mandela Bay. On keys Mayibongwe Gwam, originally from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, started playing the keyboard at church when he was 13 years old. He has since played with national luminaries local acts such as Dumza Maswana, Lawrence Matshiza, Fohloza & Dudley Tito. Lastly Nsuku Mabasa is the Bass Guitarist who too started playing music at church. Nsuku has gone on to hone his skill as a member of the NMMU Jazz ensemble where he is currently a student.

Jazz’Afro Sundays at The Barn is commissioned music shows staged every Sunday. This programme is designed to enhance Nelson Mandela Bay based musical brands and provide jobs to musicians.
